Chapo started out his life under a set of very unfair circumstances. He was tied up in a man’s yard with 5 other dogs. They were abused. They were starved. They were neglected. After 4 years of pure and utter agony, his owner finally surrendered all 6 dogs to the Harris County Animal Shelter (a kill shelter) in Houston, TX. Amongst all of the dogs, Chapo seemed to struggle the most. However, his foster mom knew exactly what to do. She gave him his space.

Fast-forward to now, Chapo has finally shown his true colors. We now know that Chapo is just a gentle, snuggly and silly boy! He does take time to trust, but as long as the hands coming at him are slow and gentle…he will eventually trust you with his whole heart. Chapo is still learning his way outside. He needs to go to a home with a backyard…a very secure backyard. Chapo is what we call a “flight risk” if he gets loose outside, he panics and no longer hears you or sees you. He just feels an extreme amount of fear. So, he needs to be slowly introduced to his new space outside. One thing that sets Capo apart from so many, is his gentle demeanor. Chapo is recommended to anyone with cats, dogs or kids. As long as the dog and child understand how to communicate with him. Chapo does not respond well to screaming kiddos or other dogs getting in his face too soon. As long as everyone remains calm…so does Chapo!

Chapo is currently dealing with 4 medical issues at the moment. Chapo has heartworms, but has finished all of his treatments and should be heartworm free very soon. He also has severe dental issues. Most of his teeth are worn down so far the central nerves are exposed. He is having a veterinary dental consultation end of February 2021. Lastly, he down have Trichiasis. Meaning, he has eyelashes that are growing inward scratching his eyeball. This may result in a possible surgery from him later on in life. Lastly, Chapo has anxiety. He only needs to be medicated in severe situations…like if we can’t get him to stop shaking. His anxiety will likely go away as he continues to learn his way around the good life.
