During the summer of 2011, two of our now Board members (Maria & Cindy) were out and about enjoying the summer sun. The two of them, (along with a few other now board members) had been working hard to get a rescue up and running. They didn’t start by taking in dogs. They started by finding a facility to rent, getting all necessary paperwork filed, working on by laws, etc … You know, the boring stuff.
Maria and Cindy decided it was a nice day, and maybe they should hit up some yard sales in the area. They went out looking for used crates, dog beds, dishes, old couches, etc. Stuff that they could fill the new rescue center with to make it look and feel like a home environment. Up until this point, it was just an empty building. Just a shell of a future rescue/sanctuary for homeless dogs. While perusing a yard sale in Lyndonville, the two saw a scrawny husky tied up in the backyard. Being the rescuer’s that they are, they asked the people holding the yard sale about the dog tied up. What was her name, her story, and why was she tied up?
Maria and Cindy were advised that the dog had been running around the area for a few weeks. No one apparently out trying to catch her, or concerned that she was lost, no owner missing her. The people running the yard sale advised that they had just caught her earlier in the day, and once the yard sale wrapped up, they planned on taking her to the local shelter/pound.
Our super heroes Maria and Cindy couldn’t let that happen. Without so much as a second thought, they knew they had to help this poor girl.
Aside from being a little on the thin and dirty side, this sweet Siberian Husky was a true gem, a diamond really.
Maria and Cindy placed a call to the owner of the DITR rescue center to advise that it looked like they would be bringing in their first dog a little sooner than expected. Tamara, one of the DITR landlords, went to the rescue center, and made one of the bedrooms up for our new guest. Our husky girl, now had her very own bedroom. Complete with a couple dog beds, a few toys, but most importantly, food, shelter, water and LOVE.
Our Husky girl became our diamond in the rough. All it took was a little bit of love, (and a bath) and this girl shined. She showed us exactly what our mission would be, and gave us our name.
Diamond paved the way for all that followed her. She helped us determine all the things that we would need to be successful. She taught us patience, and perseverance, and in return gave us love and complete adoration.
Diamond has gone on to live with an amazing family, that cares so deeply for her. She never again will be a wanderer. She never again will know what it’s like to be hungry, lost, cost, confused. She is loved. Our little Diamond in the Ruff.
